Bridge and plaza naming
We are very excited to announce the naming of the new bridge and plaza areas at Ovingham.
In partnership with the PTP Alliance, the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation and the project’s Kaurna Reference Group proposed ‘Karrarendi Yerta’ be the Aboriginal name of the new Torrens Road bridge and ‘Karrarendi Yerta Kadla’ be the name given to the new plaza area under the bridge.
The name Karrarendi Yerta directly translates as ‘travel overland’ and represents the journey Traditional Owners used as the trade route between Tandanya (Adelaide CBD) and Yerta Bulit (Port Adelaide region). These locations are now connected by Torrens Road. It is also acknowledged that Kaurna people camped along this track for thousands of years.
The names were announced at the project completion event, on 12 February 2023, by Premier Peter Malinauskas, with special guests members of the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation and the project Kaurna Reference Group in attendance.
From the design stage of the Ovingham Level Crossing Removal Project the PTP Alliance worked with the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation (KYAC) and the project Kaurna Reference Group. A key initiative from this collaboration was the incorporation of local Kaurna dreaming stories into the architectural elements of the bridge and its surroundings, including public art, nature play and plaza areas.
Thank you to the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation and the project Kaurna Reference Group.
