Major construction works for the project are scheduled to commence from 1am, Sunday, 7 July. Construction will be undertaken 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and will take up to three weeks to complete, weather permitting.

The timeframe will coincide with school holidays and university holidays, targeting a period when traffic demand in the CBD is generally lower. During this time, there will be a reduced speed limit of 25km/h on King William Street between Victoria Square and South Terrace. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Vehicle access

During construction, vehicles will be unable to cross King William Street east-west at the following intersections for the majority of the three week period:

- Wright Street - Carrington Street

- Sturt Street - Halifax Street

- Gilbert Street - Gilles Street

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when travelling through the area.

Pedestrian access

Pedestrian access across King William Street will be maintained at Gouger / Angas Street and South Terrace during construction. The project team will aim to maintain at least one other pedestrian crossing between Gouger / Angas Street and South Terrace at all times. The location of this crossing will change as works progress. There will be further information provided on pedestrian access arrangements closer to the commencement of major construction works.

Car parking

During the construction period, car parking along King William Street between Victoria Square and South Terrace will be restricted. Loading zones and access for utility services will remain available.

Construction management

As works will be underway 24/7 during this period, the project team are working to mitigate noise levels to residents and businesses as much as possible. Where possible, the noisiest works will be conducted during the hours of 7am – 11pm.

Temporary disruption to tram services

City tram services will be temporarily disrupted between South Terrace and the Entertainment Centre for up to three weeks during the major construction works period. All trams from Glenelg will terminate at South Terrace, with no trams operating in the CBD, to the East End or to the Entertainment Centre for the period of the major works. Substitute bus services will be in place during this time to service the CBD, the East End and out to the Entertainment Centre. King William Road, Unley

The project team have been engaging with the City of Unley’s King William Road Upgrade Project. This project by Council involves the redevelopment of the existing precinct along King William Road, Unley. The City of Unley has appointed BMD Constructions to undertake these works. As part of this project, there will be lane closures and delays along King William Road, Unley, which will coincide with the major works on King William Street for the City South Tram Line Replacement Project. Preliminary Works

Preliminary works for the City South Tram Line Replacement Project commenced in May 2019. These preliminary works include the installation of stormwater drainage and traffic signal infrastructure in preparation for major construction works. A site storage area will be temporarily established on the western side of Peacock Road from Friday, 28 June, until 7 July. The area will be reduced to one lane northbound only, with speed restrictions in place. This dedicated area will be used to store and weld rail in preparation for the major construction works. Parking along the Peacock Road northbound lane adjacent this site will also be temporarily removed whilst these works are in progress. Current parking arrangements along the southbound lane of Peacock Road will remain. Where possible, the project team are working hard to minimise disruption to local businesses, residents and commuters during these early works. We will continue to provide the community with updates on the timing and likely impact of these works as they progress.
