Train services return to the heart of Port Adelaide

After almost 30 years, train services will return to the heart of Port Adelaide with a $16.4 million State Budget commitment to build a new spur line and train station. The new one-kilometre spur line will link the Port’s commercial centre and the Dock One residential precinct to the Adelaide CBD.

It will provide frequent rail services for those who already call the area home and the many more set to live, work and visit Port Adelaide, which is undergoing a major redevelopment. The project will include re-construction and duplication of the spur line from the existing Outer Harbor line at Grand Junction Road and the construction of a brand new railway station at Baker Street.

The new station will be located on the doorstep of the Dock One waterfront redevelopment which will include more than 750 new townhouses and apartments, a refurbished Marine and Harbours building, and waterfront boardwalk. Bus services, routes and layover locations are also being reviewed as part of the station design process to ensure future integration of bus and rail services.

History of Port Dock Railway Station

In 1981 train services between Adelaide’s CBD and the heart of Port Adelaide were discontinued. The last passenger train to use the Port Dock Station was the remaining loop service via Rosewater and Wingfield to Dry Creek, which ended in 1988. The old Port Dock Station was demolished in 1989 to make way for the Port Adelaide Police Station and Port Adelaide Magistrates Court.

Project status

The Port Dock Railway project is currently in the design stage. Early investigations, survey, design work and stakeholder engagement have started. The construction schedule is currently being developed and will be finalised once detailed designs have been completed.
